In a finish that will be remembered for generations, J.J. Spaun conjured magic on Oakmont's treacherous 18th green, sinking an astonishing 64-and-a-half foot birdie putt to claim his maiden major championship at the rain-delayed US Open on Sunday.
The 34-year-old American completed his fairytale victory with back-to-back birdies to close out a gutsy final-round 72 (+2), finishing the tournament at 1-under-par 279 - two strokes clear of Scotland's fast-charging Robert MacIntyre (68).
Spaun, who entered the week with just one PGA Tour win to his name, showed remarkable resilience after holding the first-round lead and surviving Oakmont's brutal test through Friday and Saturday. His triumph came amid chaotic conditions that saw multiple weather delays and a leaderboard that changed by the minute.
The dramatic climax saw five players briefly tied for the lead at 1-over late in Sunday's round - a group that didn't even include eventual runner-up MacIntyre. The tournament turned on the short but dangerous par-4 17th, where Spaun launched a towering drive onto the heavily protected green before converting a crucial two-putt birdie to seize control.
Needing only par at the last for victory, Spaun watched playing partner Viktor Hovland (73) putt first from similar terrain before stepping up to deliver one of golf's most unforgettable moments. As rain poured down in sheets, his improbable cross-green bomb found center cup, triggering emotional celebrations as he became golf's newest major champion.
The Norwegian Hovland finished solo third at 2-over while Cameron Young (70), England's Tyrrell Hatton (72) and Mexico's Carlos Ortiz (73) shared fourth place another shot back.
Third-round leader Sam Burns suffered heartbreak in difficult conditions, tumbling down the standings with a closing 78 (+8) after beginning Sunday with a one-stroke advantage over Spaun and Australia's Adam Scott (79). World No.1 Scottie Scheffler fired an impressive final-round 70 to join Burns in sharing seventh place while Spain's Jon Rahm matched MacIntyre for low round of day honors with his own stellar closing effort of three-under-par.
Spaun appeared destined for heartbreak early when he suffered five bogeys in his opening six holes including cruel misfortune at No.2 where what appeared certain birdie turned into disaster when his approach struck flagstick before spinning violently backwards off front edge leaving him stunned expression face gallery collective gasp audible across course despite pouring rain conditions already making play extremely difficult even before afternoon suspension play lasting nearly two hours due unplayable conditions back nine particularly affected standing water greens fairways transforming already demanding layout into borderline unfair test skill patience endurance alike competitors spectators alike witnessed truly special moment sporting history being made most dramatic fashion imaginable fitting conclusion what many calling toughest US Open setups recent memory proving once again why Oakmont remains ultimate examination championship golf under any circumstances let alone those faced competitors this unforgettable sunday pennsylvania countryside
