The racing world witnessed the opening salvo of Godolphin's international campaign this June as their blue-blooded contender Cualificar delivered a thrilling performance in Sunday's Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, signaling the start of a fortnight packed with elite-level action for UAE-connected stables.
Under the masterful guidance of legendary trainer André Fabre, this Lope de Vega colt demonstrated remarkable grit in the French Derby, pushing eventual winner Camille Pissarro to the limit over the testing 1m2½f distance. The narrow half-length defeat only heightened anticipation for what promises to be an extraordinary sequence of races across Europe and America.
William Buick executed a textbook ride aboard Cualificar, positioning his mount perfectly in third before unleashing a powerful stretch run that nearly stole victory. "He responded to every command," Buick reflected post-race. "That final furlong showed he's got both quality and stamina - perhaps even enough for longer distances."
Arc Dreams Take Shape
The jockey's comments hint at ambitious plans brewing within Godolphin's headquarters. With whispers of an Arc preparation race and potential tilt at ParisLongchamp's showpiece event, Cualificar appears destined for bigger targets after honoring his prestigious bloodlines - sired by Jockey Club winner Lope de Vega and grandson of Shamardal, who carried Sheikh Mohammed's colors to victory in this same race nineteen years earlier.
While French Classic glory narrowly escaped them on this occasion, Godolphin immediately shifts focus toward an electrifying weekend featuring no fewer than four major international engagements - from Epsom's historic Downs to Belmont Park's storied oval.
The Friday card alone showcases two undefeated phenoms: Desert Flower attempts to join racing immortality by completing the English Guineas-Oaks double just hours before Kentucky Oaks conqueror Good Cheer puts her perfect record on the line in Belmont Park’s Acorn Stakes.
Sovereignty Seeks American Immortality
All eyes then turn to Saturday’s transatlantic showdowns where Kentucky Derby hero Sovereignty aims for back-to-back Classics in America’s “Test of Champions” while Ruling Court attempts what no horse has accomplished since Camelot (2012) – capturing both Newmarket’s Guineas and Epsom’s Derby crowns within five weeks.
Tornado Alert provides formidable backup should his stablemate falter over Epsom’s unique contours – just one example among many that illustrate Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s unrivaled global racing empire firing simultaneously across multiple continents.
The current campaign evokes memories Of Old Vic‘S landmark French Derby triumph under Steve Cauthen In1989—a watershed moment preceding Godolphin‘S official formation yet embodying The same relentless pursuit Of excellence That now sees Their royal blue silks competing For every major prize worldwide.
